Travel in peak with off peak ticket
Netley to Hove via Barnham
I hold the Off peak return = £24.80
An Anytime Day Return = £22.90
There is No Anytime return.
I now need to return in the peak.
Will an excess be possible. Will it be zero. Will a new ticked be required.

Hello! From a new member.
First post, so hopefully I will come across as reasonably sane! (maybe!)
You have probably guessed that I am in the midst of the recruitment process - (for a Grade 4 Signallers position).
I have got through the initial application and yesterday, I was sent the link for the online SJT, which I intend to take this evening.
Reading through some of the other posts, I think I have a good idea of the application process - but it's still daunting!
Anyhow, I thought I would check in and introduce myself, say hello, and now go off to worry a bit more about what is to come!

Trivia: stations with British railways Totem signs on network rail
Looking at pictures of Newark Castle and Lymington Town station got me thinking: how many stations are there on the national network (not heritage lines) that have British railways totem signs? Other examples I can think of are Codsall and Barnstaple (I think). Are there any on the Settle and Carlisle line or are all the station signs modern and/or pre BR?
Answers on a postcard, thanks.

Here is a demonstration of Hmmsim Simulator, I am making this thread in order to allow players to share converted routes seeing as BVE/openBVE routes need to be converted using a computer program (convertBVE) prior to moving over to phone or tablet and using Hmmsim to simulate the routes. Therefore, the sharing of routes on this thread will save time and will help people that don't have a PC.

Alstom trains for USA
The news on French TV and radio is that Alstom has won a big TGV order for the New York - Washington route. The units are to be built by Alstom in the US, to the chagrin of the Belfort factory. France Inter last night said that the trains would be "business class" and first class only.

http://www.alstom.com/press-centre/2...h-speed-train/
Quote:
Alstom and Amtrak announced today that they have signed a contract for Alstom to design and build 28 new high-speed trains, which will run on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) between Boston and Washington D.C. Amtrak and Alstom also signed a long-term contract under which Alstom will provide Amtrak with long-term technical support and supply spare components and parts for the maintenance of the new trainsets. Together, these contracts are worth €1.8 billion ($2 billion). The Northeast Corridor (NEC) line covers roughly 730 km (457 miles). In only ten years, the number of passengers has increased from 2.4 million passengers in FY 2002 to 3.5 million in FY 2014. As part of an effort to renew and expand their premium product, Amtrak has therefore decided to purchase new trainsets to replace the existing Acela trains, thus increasing passenger capacity, providing more frequent service, minimizing journey times, and improving operating costs and energy efficiency. The train ordered by Amtrak is Avelia Liberty, the latest development of Alstom’s high-speed train range Avelia. The new trainset will be able to carry up to 33% more passengers than the current Acela trains. The trainset configuration includes an innovative compact power car and nine passenger cars, with the possibility of three more being added if demand grows. The train is capable of travelling at speeds up to 300 km/h (186 mph), but will initially operate at a maximum speed of 257 km/h (160 mph) based on NEC track speed limits. Additionally, each concentrated power car is equipped with Alstom’s pioneering Crash Energy Management (CEM) system. Another key feature is the train’s articulated architecture... |

Why don't the TOCS create accounts on here?
I haven't seen this question asked before on RailUK Forums, so I thought I'd ask. How come the TOCs themselves don't create accounts in the Railway Jobs and Careers section?
The reason I ask this is that I also use PPRuNe, which is a pilot's forum. Both the RAF and HR staff at BA have used accounts to occasionally answer questions relating to their application processes and training and to confirm/deny the occasional rumour. Their input is generally very well received and they don't get any grief from the forum members.

Collecting tickets from an unstaffed when the TVMs are out of order
With reference to this post by reb0118 on this closed thread:-
http://www.railforums.co.uk/showpost...4&postcount=12
Yesterday morning I arrived at Blackwater to find both TVMs were out of order, so I couldn't collect a combination of tickets to be used for a journey to Cambridge via Reading and Paddington.
I sat in the rear coach and explained my predicament to the guard. He agreed that I could travel to Reading and collect the tickets there. I asked how I would be able to get through the ticket gates to access a TVM unless there was evidence of being given permission to travel. After initially refusing to consider this, he had a rethink and wrote an explanation on a blank ticket and added the service head code. The gateline staff at Reading readily accepted this evidence so I was able to obtain the tickets and continue the journey without fuss.
Although the guard didn't follow the process quoted above, my experience was a good one and my thanks go to the GWR guard and gateline staff concerned.

Quote:
The correct procedure is as follows if unable to obtain your TOD booking from a TVM (through no fault of your own):- 1) See the guard prior to, or as soon as possible after, boarding and explain the situation. 2) You will be sold a suitable ticket for your needs, this is a legal requirement, which however will be immediately refunded, sans administration fees, upon your picking up the original booking from a ticket office en route. Depending on time constraints this may be at the end of your journey. 3) If you do not have the means to pay for a ticket then a "zero fare" ticket will be issued and a TIR form submitted for non payment. This will be cancelled upon confirmation that the original booking has been collected. Remember a valid ticket is required for each journey, reference numbers are not to be accepted for travel unless authorised by control. |

Everything was set for a 7 a.m. departure, our photo charter consisted of three coaches.

Construction of this Bosnian-760 mm-gauge-line (from 1948 under Soviet rule regauged to 750 mm) started in 1908 as Borzsavölgyi Gazdasági Vasút ("Borsha Valley Economic Railway"), after the Ukrainian name of the river: Borshava Valley Railway. However, nowadays Borshava Valley is not even reached anymore, as this section lies beyond the current terminal, Irshava.

Only the branch line Khmilnyk - Vynohradiv is still seeing regular passenger traffic, the line Khmilnyk - Berehove is just used for occasional transfers to the depot, Khmilnyk - Irshava not at all anymore.
Former Berehove freight yard testifies to the erstwhile importance of the railway. Goods traffic stopped around the year 2000, in the end mainly serving Pryborshavske lime kiln.

We departed with only two coaches, one had to be shunted away by muscle power (several travelling companions pushed from the back).

08:40 Zurich to Graz - Panorama carriage
I am starting to plan for a trip to Austria next year.
I will be spending a week in Schladming.
The plan at the moment is to travel via Paris to Zurich, stay 1 night then get the 08:40 EC 163 Transalpin service via the Arla Pass, which calls at Schladming. (the train destination is Graz)
The EUropean timetable shows that this services includes a Panorama carriage.
The train composition at the site below indicates that this is first class.
http://www.vagonweb.cz/razeni/vlak.p...16&lang=en#v46
Where is the best place to book this - is the panorama carriage bookable online?
also is it a 1st class coach or is another supplement payable?
on a couple of sample dates in October:
The OBB site first claimed there was no 1st class then offered 1st at 150 euros more than the standard advance fare. (std advance is 39 euros)
Loco2 is charging £159 for first class (£93 for std class) - flexible tickets only
swiss railways (SBB) site is offering a 1st class advanced single ticket for 83 Swiss Francs - which seems to be the best deal at the moment.
It is an EC service not a railjet - OBB offers advanced fares for 1st class on the railjets from Zurich at a 15 euro supplement over the std class, but not on the 08:40.
The alternative option using the 06:40 or 10:40 railjets involve a 12 minute change at Salzburg - is that connection feasible?

Class 175 Audio Points
This is a bit of a random question, but I was just curious :) Today on a Class 175 I noticed audio points (if that's what they're called) fitted to the armrests. How many 175's are fitted with these? I haven't seen them on any other 175 I have travelled on. They are obviously deactivated now, but were they used as part of a trial at some point? This particular unit was 175115. I've also attached a photo of an armrest aboard a unit without audio points (175102) to allow for comparison (the third image isn't the best quality unfortunately; it was a very busy train :p) Many thanks.

Afternoon folks,
On Saturday Belmond Grand Hibernian liveried 216 was used on the 0935 North Wall - Ballina IWT Liner. This was the first run of the loco on the mainline since repainting into Belmond livery. It still requires branding to be applied.
Also pictured were the two Mayo Specials to Heuston for the Mayo - Tyrone Match in Croke Park, Dublin.

Also the latest batch of photos from my recent UK trip have now been uploaded. These are from Tuesday 2nd August.
After arriving in Edinburgh off the Sleeper from London I took an out and back spin to Tweedbank on the recently reopened Borders Railway.
Once back in Edinburgh it was time for some sightseeing of the City before taking a trip out to North Queensferry to view the Forth Bridge. Taking 68002 out and back of course on the Scotrail loco hauled turn.

Morning all,
I've finally gotten around to uploading pictures from last Sunday's RPSI Radio Train railtour from Dublin to Kilkenny.
What should have been a simple out and back tour with the steam engine No. 4 turned into a "spin and win" railtour after No. 4 set off the Hot Box Alarm at Straffan and the the train was stopped at Sallins for it to be examined. It was found that there was a lubrication issue with a coupling rod bearing on No.4. The temperature was too high for the locomotive to continue and the train was shunted onto the loop and No.4 went into the head shunt.
Rescue came in the form of the Retro CIE livery 071 which was sent L.E. from Inchicore to Sallins to work the train forward to Kilkenny. At Kilkenny 076 on hand to shunt the train, originally to release No. 4 but as the tour was now diesel hauled 076 took over for the trip back to Dublin and shunt released 071 which then went L.E. from Kilkenny to Waterford.
Despite the outward delay it was an excellent railtour and with the 071's taking over we had an early arrival at Connolly. The RPSI kept all the passengers informed during the delay with regular updates and nobody seemed to mind the extended stay at Sallins (80 mins).
